Writing a cover letter when you have no work experience yet

No experience almost never means no evidence. It means the evidence is filed somewhere other than a job title, and the letter has to go and find it.

— the proof does not have to be paid to be proof.

The phrase "no experience" is doing a lot of unfair work. It usually means no employment history, which is a filing fact rather than a fact about what you can do. A first letter is easier once you separate the two.

What counts as evidence

  • Coursework that produced something. A dissertation, a build, an analysis somebody else used. Relevant coursework earns its place when it has an output.
  • Projects. Anything you made and finished, paid or not. Finishing is the part employers are reading for.
  • Volunteering and societies. Running the budget for a student society is running a budget.
  • Part-time and seasonal work. A shift job teaches reliability, cash handling, dealing with people at their worst. Say the specific thing rather than the category.
  • Competitions, certifications and open work. A placing, a passed exam, a repository someone else has used.

The test is not whether it was employment. The test is whether you can attach a result to it.

Write one line per fact, then build from those

Before writing a paragraph, write the evidence as flat lines: one fact each, in your own words, with a number where a number honestly exists. This is exactly the shape the cover letter builder asks for when you have no résumé to connect. The own-lines box takes one fact per line and the letter is built only from what is in it.

Doing it this way has a useful side effect. A flat list makes it obvious which facts have results attached and which are descriptions of an activity. The ones with results are your proof paragraphs; the rest are context.

What the four paragraphs become

The opening names the role and the employer, as in any letter. The proof paragraphs take your two or three strongest lines and attach the result to each. The motivation paragraph, which in most letters is the weakest, is the strongest one you have here, and it makes a first letter close to a motivation letter in shape: a person applying for a first role has an actual reason, and it is the one thing no reading of a document can produce. The closing offers to talk.

That is a short letter, and short is correct. The product's review step measures the reading length of your draft and reports it against a guide of 140 to 420 words, described in the product as a useful guide rather than a rule. A first letter sitting at the bottom of that range is doing nothing wrong.

What not to do with the space

Do not apologise. Do not list the things you are willing to learn, which is a description of everyone who has ever applied for anything. Do not describe your personality in adjectives, because adjectives are the part of a letter a reader discounts automatically. Every one of those costs a paragraph that could have held something you did.

And do not inflate. A month of volunteering is a month. The distance between "ran the society's finances for a year" and "ran a department" is the distance at which a letter stops being defensible in the room afterwards.

The gaps list is not an accusation

When you paste the posting, the engine lists the requirements your evidence cannot support, and does not claim them anywhere in the letter. For a first application that list is often long, which feels discouraging and is actually the most useful thing on the screen. It is the interview preparation, written for you, and it tells you exactly which two things are worth learning before the next application.

Fix the résumé at the same time

The letter and the résumé are made of the same material, so the work is shared. Writing a résumé with no experience covers how to file projects and coursework so a reader finds them, and the first-job page goes through which sections to lead with. The order that saves the most time is to get the evidence into the résumé, then connect it and let the letter select from it.

One structural note worth knowing early: the ATS check on this site applies an evidence ceiling when a document has no experience section and thin content, so a first résumé can score lower than its writing deserves. That is a property of the measurement rather than a judgement of you, and the low-score page explains which ceiling is doing it.

What this will not do

It will not invent a job for you and it will not claim a skill your evidence does not show. Nothing here predicts whether an employer will reply. What a first letter can do is arrive specific, short and checkable, which is more than most first letters manage.

What a first letter should sound like

Plain. The instinct with little history is to compensate with register, and a first letter written in borrowed formality reads as exactly that. Short sentences about real things are more convincing at every level of experience and particularly at this one.

It also helps to be specific about scale rather than hiding it. A society of forty members is a society of forty members, and saying so is better than a vague claim that implies four hundred. A reader who can picture the thing you are describing believes the rest of the letter, and the numbers at this stage of a career are small for everybody.

Write it from what you have

Connect a résumé or type your evidence one fact per line. The letter uses what is there and returns fewer paragraphs rather than padding.

Questions

What if I have never had a job
Then the evidence is coursework, projects, volunteering, competitions, a society you ran or a thing you built. All of it is real and all of it can carry a result. A paid job is one source of proof rather than the only one.
Should I say I have no experience
No, and not because it is a secret. The sentence spends a paragraph on an absence when the same space could describe something you did. State what you have and let the reader draw the obvious conclusion about the rest.
How many proof paragraphs do I need
Two is enough when they are specific. The builder returns fewer paragraphs rather than padding when the evidence is thin, which is the honest outcome and a shorter letter.
Can I use the letter to explain my degree
One sentence, if the degree is the relevant evidence. A paragraph about a course is only worth writing when it produced something you can describe: a project, a result, a piece of work somebody used.
Does this need an account
No. The draft stays in this browser and export to PDF and DOCX is free.

Conxfolio is a free set of four career tools: a résumé builder with 37 rendered layouts, an ATS résumé checker that prints its own arithmetic, a cover letter builder that traces every proof paragraph back to the line it came from, and a portfolio builder with 20 authored designs. There is no account to create, nothing is held back for a paid plan, and no language model is used anywhere in the product, so the readers, the score and the letter are deterministic code you can check.
