You ask for Inventory Management, and that is work I have already done: Managed inventory management of donated stock through 400 items a week.
I have worked as Volunteer at Meadowbrook Charity Shop, 2024 — present. I have also worked as Shop Supervisor at Nordvale Stores, 2004 — 2023. I delivered customer support at the till for 120 transactions an afternoon. I also supervised a shift team of 6 volunteers across two afternoons a week.
I introduced a sorting routine that cut unsold donations by 30%. I also trained 5 new volunteers on the till and the gift aid form. The posting asks for Inventory Management and Customer Support — both of which I've worked with directly. The posting also asks for Safeguarding, which I have not used in these roles.

Mistakes that sink a volunteer cover letter
The first is treating a volunteer letter as informal. The second is ignoring the charity's cause. The third is leaving out availability.

What it refused to claim
One gap came back: safeguarding. The posting asks for awareness of safeguarding when working with the public, and twenty years of retail supervision does not evidence it.
Most charities train volunteers in this, so the honest position is an empty hand rather than an implied qualification. The gaps list is the interview, and this one takes a sentence to answer.
What a volunteer letter has to prove
Exactly what a paid one proves. Hours you can commit, people you can hold, money you can handle, and something you improved. Counting unpaid work the same way as paid work is the single change that makes a volunteering application readable, and it is also what makes that work usable later on a document for a paid job.
The same discipline works in reverse. Somebody applying for paid work after years of volunteering has a history full of countable evidence, as long as it was written down. Care work and unpaid experience covers that case in full.
