Start your cover letter.
A free cover letter builder. Write your letter yourself in a blank editor, or bring your résumé and a job description and get a first draft built from sentences your résumé can support.
Choose Write a letter to open a blank editor, or Start with your résumé to import it and review what was read. Under Details & drafting add the role, the company and the job description, then Create new draft.
Each paragraph has its own Details, which shows the line of your résumé a sentence came from. When the posting asks for something your résumé cannot show, the draft says so in one plain sentence instead of claiming it. Edit every word, choose a design, and download PDF or Word.
How the free cover letter builder works
- Write a letter or start with your résumé — Open a blank editor, or import your résumé and check what was read.
- Add the job — Under Details & drafting, add the role, the company and the job description, then press Create new draft.
- Edit your letter — Each block has a word count and a Details button that shows which line of your résumé a sentence came from.
- Review and download — Go through the Before you send checklist, choose one of 12 designs and download PDF or Word, or copy the text. /cover-letter-designs
The draft only states what your résumé shows. A requirement it cannot support is named in one sentence, not claimed.

Questions
- Is this cover letter builder free, with no sign up?
- Yes. There is no account and no payment. Writing, drafting, the designs and PDF and Word downloads are free.
- Can it write a cover letter from my résumé?
- Yes. Start with your résumé, add the role, company and job description under Details & drafting, and press Create new draft. The sentences come from what your résumé shows.
- Do I need a résumé?
- No. Choose Write a letter to open a blank editor and write it yourself. A job description is needed only to create a draft.
- Does it make up experience?
- No. Each sentence can be traced to a line of your résumé under the paragraph's Details. When the posting asks for something your résumé does not show, the letter says so plainly.
- Can I edit the letter?
- Yes. Every block is yours to rewrite, with its own word count, and you can restore the wording built from your evidence.
- How long should the letter be?
- The review shows the length in words in its Before you send checklist, beside the recipient and signature checks. Most letters work at three to four short paragraphs.
- Can I keep older drafts?
- Yes. Save versions and choose an earlier one on the review; up to 12 are kept.
- What happens to the text I use?
- Your work is kept in this browser. A file you import is read here first, and only the text it contains is sent to be sorted into fields — if this browser cannot read the file, the file itself is sent instead. The text of a résumé or a letter is sent to our server when you run the ATS check, ask for a draft, or export a PDF.
