Resume.io is a large, established résumé builder with a subscription behind it. This is a free set of tools with no subscription at all. Those are different businesses before they are different products, and the difference in business model explains almost every difference in behaviour.

Their side of this page is quoted from resume.io's own pricing page, read on 12 September 2026. Prices change, so check it rather than trust a page on a competitor's site, including this one.

What their pricing page lists

A free plan at €0.00, described with three lines: only one resume and cover letter, downloads only in TXT format, and limited resume sharing and analytics. A seven-day trial at €2.95, with unlimited resumes and cover letters, all premium templates and colours, and unlimited PDF downloads, which their page states auto-renews to €24.95 billed every four weeks. A quarterly plan at €49.95.

That is the architecture, and it is a common and coherent one: the tool is free to use and the file is the thing you pay for.

What this side is

No plans. The résumé builder, the ATS checker, the cover letter builder and the portfolio builder are free in full. All 37 résumé designs, all 12 letter designs and all 20 portfolio designs are available, with none marked premium. PDF and DOCX both download free and neither is watermarked, which was checked on the file rather than asserted, on the no-watermark page.

There is no account either, so there is nowhere for a card to be collected. The one place an email is asked for is claiming the public address of a published portfolio.

Where a paid builder genuinely fits

A subscription buys a company that can staff support, keep a large template library current, and run a product roadmap. If you want somebody to answer an email when something goes wrong, that is worth paying for and this is not it. A larger template library is also a real thing, and a person who has looked through 37 designs and liked none of them should go where there are more.

The other honest point is that a free tool cannot promise to exist for ever. A paid product has a reason to.

Where this model pays

When you do not want a subscription for a document you will send eleven times. When you want the file without a decision at the end of the work. And when you want to see the reasoning: the checker prints the multiplication behind its score and prices each remaining fix, described in why the checker prints its own arithmetic.

Moving between them

Export whatever the other tool will give you and import it here. A text export is enough, because the reading puts it into fields and shows you what it found beside where it came from. Then choose a design and export a PDF and a DOCX.

Check both, in ten minutes

Take whatever file each tool gives you and run both through the checker, which is free and needs no account. Compare the word, line and heading counts against the pages you are holding. That is a measurement of the document rather than of the brand that made it, and it is the only part of this comparison that is about your own work.

The other three tools, and why they are in the comparison

A résumé is rarely the whole job. The same material has to become a letter for each posting and, for some roles, a page somebody can look at. Here those are the same product: the letter builder reads the résumé as evidence, and the portfolio builder renders the same roles and projects as a page with an address you can claim.

Whether that bundling is a benefit depends on whether you want the other two. If a résumé is genuinely all you need, judge the builders on the résumé alone. What a free tier is really telling you

A free tier is a statement about where a company believes the value sits. Downloads only in TXT format says the value is the file. A free tier with every design and both export formats says the value is somewhere else, which here is that the product costs little to run because no model is called anywhere in it.

Neither position is dishonest, and reading them this way makes the choice easier than comparing template counts.
