Retail work has better numbers than most office jobs, and they never reach the page

Shop work produces figures all day long and describes itself in duties. The gap between those two facts is where most retail résumés lose their argument.

— you know the footfall. put it on the line.

Retail is one of the few jobs where the numbers are collected for you all day. Transactions, footfall, shrinkage, conversion, average basket, hours covered, stock lines managed. Then the résumé says responsible for customer service and cash handling, which is a job description rather than a record. The résumé builder cannot fix that for you, and the fix is two sentences of work.

The figures the rule can read

The ATS résumé checker grades measurable evidence with a rule that recognises percentages, currency amounts, multipliers such as 3x, the form 12+ followed by a word, and a number followed by a unit noun. Customers is on that list. So are clients, hours, days, weeks, months and years. Staff, shifts, orders, units, stores, branches and teams were absent until 13 September, when the list was widened to cover people served or led and things run, delivered or handled, and all seven now read as counts. Tills and lines are still outside it. That makes retail well served by the rule, provided the line is written with the right noun in it.

Four lines a shop job can carry

Served 300 customers a day through two peak seasons without a till discrepancy. Cut stock loss by 18% over a year after rewriting the delivery check. Covered 30 hours a week alongside full-time study for two years. Trained six new starters on the till and the returns process. Each is true of somebody, each opens with something done, and three of the four carry a figure the rule reads.

Shift patterns and what they prove

Reliability is the thing a retail employer buys and the hardest thing to evidence, because nothing happening is the outcome. Write it as coverage and duration: two years of weekend shifts, opening and closing responsibility, a keyholder role. A number of hours and a number of years are both units the measurable rule recognises, which is a rare case of the machine and the human wanting the same sentence.

Building it on the device you actually have

A lot of retail applications are written on a phone in a break room. The builder runs at phone width as its own layout, and the work is saved in this browser as you go, with the save routine reading the bytes back before it reports success. There is nothing to install and no account, which is set out in why there is no account.

Several shops, one chain

Moves within a chain are promotions and should read as promotions rather than as job changes. Either separate entries under one employer or one entry with the moves in the lines will do it; multiple roles at one company works through both. The parseability rule cares only that the dates are in a consistent shape.

The letter, when one is asked for

Retail postings often ask for a short letter and rarely read a long one. The cover letter builder selects its proof paragraphs from your own résumé lines and returns fewer rather than padding, which is the right behaviour for this. The review step reports the draft's length and calls the usual range a guide rather than a rule.

Moving out of retail

Retail evidence transfers further than most people writing it believe. Stock control is forecasting. A rota is resource planning. Shrinkage is loss prevention with a number attached. Training six new starters is onboarding. None of those is a re-labelling exercise if the underlying line is true, and all of them are the vocabulary the next posting will use.

The cover letter builder is where that argument gets made, because it selects proof paragraphs from your own résumé lines and returns the requirements it cannot support as gaps rather than claims. We built exactly that letter from an invented retail manager's résumé, and what it selected and refused is in career changers and transferable lines.

The limits, plainly

The checker is not an employer's system, it uses no job description and it predicts nothing, and nothing on this site claims a document gets anyone a job. What it does is print the counts it read and the sum it used, which is taken apart in how the ATS score is calculated. The no-experience guide and action verbs for a résumé cover the writing, and everything is free with no watermark.

One practical note about numbers you do not have. Retail figures are usually visible on a report you can no longer see once you have left, so write them down while you are still there or use the ones you can stand behind from memory with a qualifier such as roughly or about. A rounded honest figure is worth more than a precise invented one, and the checker cannot tell the difference between the two, which is exactly why the responsibility sits with you rather than with the tool.

Questions

Which retail figures does the checker recognise
Its measurable rule reads percentages, currency amounts, multipliers such as 3x, the form 12+ followed by a word, and a number followed by a unit noun. The list was widened on 13 September and now includes customers, clients, staff, colleagues, shifts, orders, units, stores, branches, teams, hours, days, weeks, months and years.
Does it count staff or tills or lines
No. Those words are not on the list, so a line about eleven staff or four tills registers as unmeasured. Write the same fact with a figure the rule reads where one honestly exists.
Can I build a résumé on my phone
Yes. The builder runs at phone width as the same product rather than a cut-down version, and the work is saved in this browser as you go.
How do I write several shops for one chain
As separate entries under the same employer, or as one entry with the moves in the lines. There is a guide on multiple roles at one company.
Does the checker penalise part-time work
No. It has no rule about hours, contract type or the length of a role.

Conxfolio is a free set of four career tools: a résumé builder with 37 rendered layouts, an ATS résumé checker that prints its own arithmetic, a cover letter builder that traces every proof paragraph back to the line it came from, and a portfolio builder with 20 authored designs. There is no account to create, nothing is held back for a paid plan, and no language model is used anywhere in the product, so the readers, the score and the letter are deterministic code you can check.
