One reporter cover letter, printed exactly as the builder wrote it. The reporter and the title are invented. The selection came out of the product, and so did one instructive omission.

This page is worth reading for one omission. Casper Vionnet-Marr is invented, The Pellworth Herald is invented, and so are both of his titles. The letter is real output: the evidence below was handed to the cover letter builder and the reply is printed word for word, including what it left out.

Direct voice, the one the door opens with. Three of the eight paragraphs are Casper's own sentences, and neither of the two you would expect is among them.

The two lines that did not make it, and why

The first line of his evidence is "Wrote 240 news stories a year to a daily deadline across council, crime and community." It is the sentence that describes the job, and the engine never considered it. Its evidence filter only treats a line as a candidate when the line carries one of the past-tense achievement verbs it holds, and wrote is not one of them, although rewrote is. The sentence was discarded before any ranking happened. Starting it with Produced, Filed or Delivered would put it straight back into contention.

The second is the planning investigation line, which was considered, matched reporting, and lost to the duplicate rule: an earlier paragraph had already claimed reporting, and a line that adds no new requirement is skipped so the letter does not argue the same point twice. Two different mechanisms, two strong sentences out. Action verbs on a document is the practical fix for the first one.

Where the three that did appear came from

Lines 7, 8 and 9 of the evidence list. The court line matched two requirements at once, interviewing and reporting, and carries a figure. The social media line matched a third. The training line went in on its numbers. Four requirements were recognised in the advertisement and the letter claimed three of them.

What it refused to claim

Nothing came back as a gap on this posting, because every requirement the matcher recognised was evidenced somewhere in the list. SEO is named in the advertisement and sits in his skills, so it was not reported. An empty gaps list is a statement about what the matcher could see rather than a verdict on the application. The honest limits of every tool is the piece to read alongside it.

The guarantee that does hold in every case is the other one: no sentence in the letter claims anything Casper's own lines do not say. No language model is involved at any point.

What a reporter's letter has to prove

Output, exposure and law. Output is stories a year to a deadline. Exposure is councils, courts and the calls that go unanswered three times. Law is contempt and reporting restrictions, which is the part an editor worries about when hiring somebody they have not watched work.

Write each line starting with a plain past-tense verb, both because it reads better and because, on the evidence of this page, it is the difference between being ranked and being skipped. Evidence you forgot you had is useful for freelance and shift work on a desk.

The same evidence in the other two voices

Three voices ship with the builder, and changing one rewrites the connectors rather than the evidence. The ranking never sees the voice, so the same lines are selected in the same order in all three. Run on this page's own evidence, the warm voice opens "I'd like to be considered for the Reporter role at The Pellworth Herald." and closes "I'd be glad to walk through any of this with you." The formal voice opens "I am writing to apply for the position of Reporter at The Pellworth Herald." and closes "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further." The middle connector changes with it: warm writes "You mention Reporting, Interviewing and Social Media Marketing; those have been the centre of my recent work." and formal writes "The role calls for Reporting, Interviewing and Social Media Marketing, each of which I have applied in practice." In the product, switching voice keeps the draft you already have as a version before it writes the new one, so nothing is lost by trying the other two.
