What to write when the work produced no figure at all

A great deal of real work produces nothing countable. Care, teaching, policy, research, support, most of management. The advice to quantify everything leaves those people staring at a blank section, and it is bad advice.
What the rules actually require
Action-led lines up to 30. Measurable evidence up to 25. Evidence depth across roles up to 25. Readable volume up to 20. Only the second concerns figures, and it reaches full marks at two qualifying lines. The other 75 points are available to a document with no numbers in it at all.
Shape one: scope
What you were responsible for, and how big it was. Ran the out-of-hours service for a district of four towns. No performance figure, and a reader now knows the size of the job.
Shape two: frequency
How often the thing happened. Chaired the weekly safeguarding meeting for two years. Repetition is evidence of trust and of consistency, and both are things a reader is trying to infer anyway.
Shape three: duration
How long you carried it. Held the on-call rota through two winters of escalation. A period is a claim about endurance and about being the person who stayed.
Shape four: consequence
What existed afterwards that did not exist before. Wrote the induction pack the department still uses. That is a durable result with no figure attached, and it is the subject of the runbook line.
Why these are not padding
Because each carries information a reader can use. Padding is a sentence about being responsible for delivering excellence, which tells nobody which thing, how big, how often or what changed. The distinction is the same one how to write experience bullets draws.
Then check the rows separately
Run the ATS checker and read the four content rows rather than the total. A document of good scope lines will show strong action-led writing, strong depth and a weaker measurable row, which is an accurate description of the work rather than a failure. Whether to chase the last figure is then a decision you make with the price in front of you.
The trap of the borrowed figure
A team's number, an organisation's number, a figure from a report you contributed to. These are tempting precisely because they are true, and they are still a problem when they imply a result you did not produce. Worked in a department that reduced waiting times by 40% is a true sentence and a misleading line. The repair is to keep the figure and move it into context: describe your part with your own verb and let the department's figure sit behind it as scale rather than as your result. That is honest, and it usually reads better.
What this page does not claim
That figures do not help. They do, and two of them earn a rule's full marks, which is why numbers you can actually get is worth an hour first. What this page refuses is the idea that a career without dashboards is unwritable, which is a belief that produces blank sections and invented percentages in roughly equal measure.
One last shape for work that cannot be described at all, which happens with confidential clients, protected settings and security work. Describe the frame rather than the content: the sector, the size band, the duration, the kind of responsibility. A line saying you ran safeguarding casework for a local authority over three years tells a reader everything they need and discloses nothing. That is a scope line doing its job, and it is more honest than a vague sentence written to avoid the problem.
A closing note about how this reads to a person rather than to a scorer. Scope, frequency, duration and consequence are the four things an interviewer is trying to establish anyway, usually by asking. A document that answers them in advance makes the conversation start further along, which is worth more than a percentage nobody follows up. The rules happen to reward the same writing, which is a coincidence worth noticing rather than the reason to do it.
